I teach at home, in the Sharrow area of Sheffield, very near London Road and local buses (25, 25A, 75, 76, 97, 98, among others and the 43 and 44 from Dronfield).
Lessons vary in length from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the needs of each student. Some pupils choose to come once a fortnight, though I don't advise this for younger children.
I don't usually teach during school holidays, but I can arrange some lessons at these times if students particularly want or need them.
If you are considering lessons, I recommend a 30 minute trial. This will cost £20. If you contact me we can arrange a mutually convenient time.
It is easiest if you already own a flute. However, unless you buy from a specialist music shop, I would not recommend buying a flute for a beginner without professional advice. Some flutes which appear to be bargains aren’t robust enough to stand regular use and this can be especially frustrating for a beginner. If you are interested, but do not own a flute do contact me anyway. I will arrange to have an instrument for you to try, and advise you on the appropriate instrument to purchase.
It is useful if you bring both a piece you are currently working on and one that you can play easily and enjoy. If you want to use a CD accompaniment, please do bring it with you. If you have been practising scales, I would also like to hear a few you are confident with. If you have taken a practical exam recently, it would help me to see your mark sheet.
At the introductory lesson we can discuss your needs and aims, as well as any previous knowledge you may have. It also gives us a chance to meet and see if we get on. It is very important that you and I can form a good relationship if your lessons are to be successful and enjoyable.
Some time to get to know each other and discuss where you are and what you need
We can get to know each other and discuss how I can help you learn.
fees from September 2019
I require 24 hours notice of cancellations, otherwise the full fee is payable.
Fees are payable half termly, in advance. I require 24 hours notice of cancellations, otherwise the full fee is payable.
I try to let students know of any weeks I am not going to be available at the start of each billing period. If I need to miss a lesson unexpectedly, I will give as much notice as possible. If any refunds are due for missed lessons from one billing period, I will give a credit against the next bill.
If a pupil wants to stop taking lessons, I require a half term’s notice.
